Dr. McTernan was a Pratt Presidential Fellow at Virginia Tech. He has worked as an engineering consultant and in government and government affiliated laboratories with special interests in the environmental impacts associated with energy production; particularly synthetic fuels development and coal mining. He was an Environmental Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) with service at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency working in groundwater pollution from agricultural and other chemicals. Additionally, he received a National Research Council (NRC) appointment in Eastern Europe to evaluate environmental impacts remaining in post -Soviet satellite countries.

Dr. McTernan teaches undergraduate introductory classes in Environmental Science and Engineering as well as graduate classes in Risk Assessment, Groundwater Pollution Control, Geostatistical Analyses and Water Quality Management. Recent research interests include risk analysis for agricultural chemicals, geostatistical simulation, decision analysis modeling and the development of Artificial Neural Network models for environmental applications. He has served as the graduate committee chair for over 60 graduate students in the last dozen years.
